About The100Hands

Being together through the connecting power of movement

The100Hands from Breda creates physical, interactive dance performances children and families.

We believe that encounter, touch and physical interaction are essential for bridging social divides and fostering our sense of humanness. We create spaces where differences can meet and where movement, warmth and mutual understanding can emerge – beyond words, with the body as the connecting language.

We bring people together in a shared space with a focus on creating live experiences centred on current themes from everyday life. By presenting different perspectives and allowing room for freedom of choice and interaction, we invite the audience to explore the (un)known. We believe this raises insights into oneself and others, and cultivates a sense of connection, joy and wonder.

We create small-scale, interactive dance performances for all ages, often without text – (langu)age no problem – in which the audience actively participates. We collaborate with schools, festivals and cultural organisations both in the Netherlands and abroad, so that we too can continue to encounter the unknown. Besides we organise workshops, educational programmes (including teaching materials) and lecture performances that encourage physical expression, interaction and reflection.

In addition to the Netherlands, The100Hands’ work has performed in Belgium, China, Denmark, Germany, Croatia, Austria, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

BOARD

The100Hands is supported by the The100Hands Foundation and its board members: Johan Oudijk (chair), Jan Baanstra (treasurer), Nikita Maheshwary (member). The association is a non-profit organisation and the board works on a voluntary basis.

OBJECTIVES OF THE100HANDS FOUNDATION

The100Hands Foundation aims to:

a. Contribute, through art and artistic practice, to an open and broad cultural dialogue, in which the development of equality and the formation of local and international communities is encouraged as much as possible;

b. Facilitate projects in all artistic disciplines, primarily dance and theatre, as well as in the field of education;

c. Carrying out all further activities that are related to the foregoing in the broadest sense or that may contribute to it. The foundation is a non-profit organisation.

2. The foundation seeks to achieve its objective, inter alia, by:

a. Organising and producing (or commissioning the production of) works of art such as choreographies, plays, performances, installations, publications and lectures;

b. Organising or commissioning artistic, social and community activities for a wide audience through lessons, workshops and courses, and developing these activities through research;

c. Raising funds and securing grants;

d. Establishing and maintaining contacts, as well as collaborating with individuals and organisations with similar objectives, both within and outside the Netherlands;

e. Any other activities that may directly or indirectly further the objective.

BOARD

The board of the foundation consists of a number of at least three directors, to be determined by the board, which meets 3–4 times a year. The directors are appointed and suspended by the board for a period of three years. They step down in accordance with a schedule to be drawn up by the board. A director who has stepped down in accordance with the schedule may be reappointed immediately, but no more than twice. The board approves the policy plans, annual reports and financial statements, and also acts as a sounding board for the Foundation’s management. The board members do not receive any remuneration for their work.

CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY AND CODES

At The100Hands, an internal code of ethics guides our artistic work and business operations: respect for one another, equitable distribution, and sustainable production. According to its articles of incorporation, The100Hands Foundation has a social mission in creating cultural value: to contribute, through art and artistic practice, to an open and broad cultural dialogue that fosters equality and the development of local and international communities as much as possible (from the founding charter). This also translates into the application of the three cultural codes: after extensive reflection on the codes, an internal memo was drafted in 2022 that included a practical analysis of the codes. In this light the board has thoroughly reviewed the implementation of the three cultural codes. In addition, sustainability has been proactively integrated into our work processes and agreements. Key points and a detailed description of all three codes, along with our vision on sustainability, can be found in the document “Codes and Sustainability”(in Dutch) in the Downloads section.

Diversity & Inclusion Code

The connection and humanness that arise from hearing, acknowledging, and understanding each other’s perspectives are the driving force behind all performances, and the DNA of the organization. This is reflected in the composition of the team (staff), the choice of themes and performances (program), and the venues where we perform (partners)—all with the goal of creating connection everywhere (audience). Throughout all these P’s, The100Hands embodies this mantra: As a human being and a creator, I am aware that I cannot see or understand everything from my own perspective, that I have blind spots, and that I cannot represent everyone. That is why I seek out other people and perspectives. I am endlessly curious about others and believe that their perspectives can enrich me and my world.

Diversity and inclusion are of paramount importance to The100Hands, but they are never a given. For more information, see the document “Codes and Sustainability” in the Downloads section (in Dutch).

Fair Practice Code

In October 2023, The100Hands received the Kunstenbond award for the best example of Fair Practice in dance, an award granted at the recommendation of dancers. This is a wonderful recognition of the work The100Hands has been doing for years to promote fair and caring working practices. The100Hands has a transparent compensation policy that follows the Collective Labor Agreement (CAO) for Theater and Dance. This document places significant emphasis on career development opportunities, as well as on occasional overtime. In addition to addressing the “hard” factors that can be included in a compensation policy, The100Hands also places great emphasis on the “soft” aspects of good employment practices, such as workplace etiquette, timely payment, and employee well-being. For more details see the document “Codes and Sustainability” in the Downloads section (in Dutch).

Code of Cultural Governance

In the area of governance, The100Hands focuses on trust, transparency, and sound, sustainable forms of collaboration and management. This also forms the foundation for how we interact with one another and is established across all areas. We have a guide on (undesirable) conduct, which provides a roadmap for dealing with any instances of inappropriate behaviour and indicates the availability of both an internal and an external confidential advisor. All key points of the Code of Cultural Governance can be found in the document “Codes and Sustainability” (in Dutch) in the Downloads section, where the Concise protocol “Undesirable conduct and behaviour” (in Dutch and English) is also available.

Sustainability

In addition to the three established codes, The100Hands also places a strong emphasis on sustainability and circularity. In the broadest sense, sustainability refers to the ability to continuously maintain or support a process over time. We believe that this depends on strong relationships and connections at all levels—which is precisely the focus and foundation of all our work. We believe that this depends on strong relationships and connections at every level—and that is precisely the focus and foundation of all our work. Connecting sustainability thus defines how we engage with the world and how we operate as an organization. Specific strategies can be found in the document “Codes and Sustainability” (in Dutch) in the Downloads section.

SOURCES OF INCOME

The100Hands Foundation receives structural funding from the City of Breda for the period 2025–2028.

In addition to income from buy-outs, ticket sales and co-productions, we organise educational activities such as workshops, lectures and, on occasion, introductory talks. We collaborate with both public and private organisations, including national and international theatres, production companies, and arts and theatre festivals. Furthermore, project-specific funding applications are submitted to private foundations.

We work in partnership with the agency Vanaf2, which acts as an intermediary between clients in the Netherlands and Belgium, and The100Hands. The partnership is characterised by the following key qualities: reliability, professionalism, a hands-on approach, commitment, a fresh perspective and openness. Vanaf2 handles negotiations and contracting, whilst The100Hands carries out the work and issues invoices. The partnership operates on a no-cure-no-pay basis, whereby the agency generates its own income from the bookings.

ANBI

The100Hands Foundation has ANBI status (Dutch Public Benefit Organisation), which means that donations to the organisation offer tax benefits. The100Hands Foundation is registered under the legal identification number (RSIN): 8539.33.832
