25Feet

An interactive dance performance about the dynamics between intimacy and violence

How much distance do you maintain from others during a conversation? Why might you feel irritated in a crowded space? Sociologists have studied when a space can be called public and when it becomes social, personal, or intimate.

In 25Feet, the audience is invited to join two dancers in exploring what that means in practice. At a distance of 25 feet (7.6 meters), you are in the public space and act as a spectator among the dancers. If the distance becomes smaller, one enters the social, personal, and intimate space. How much freedom of movement do we actually have, and how close can we get to one another? This performance makes it very tangibly clear how distance and proximity create friction, and it is in that proximity that the most intense physical interaction takes place.

A performance that explores the intersection of dance and environment, art and science, lecture and performance, experience and participation. A performance about social interaction and the bond of trust between dancer and audience, but actually between us – people.

Cuddle up with strangers without thinking: iiiieeeewww. The100Hands gets it done.
